About Us

My husband Jamie and I became the proud owners of ‘Kookaburra Nook Homestead' on the 8th of January 1998. We built our home on the property and moved in on the 31st of January 2001.

Transforming our bare block (save for the presence of four established trees) to the productive, permaculture paradise it is now fast becoming, has been a labour of love for us.

The subdivision our property lies within, was originally farmland. Situated in the flood plains at the foot of the Darling Ranges, it was mainly used as grazing pasture for cattle.

This picture is made up of 3 photos taken in January 1998 and joined together to give a panoramic view of the block. The Darling Ranges are clear in the background.

Years of clearing and grazing, coupled with the strong winds common to the region, had stripped away the top soil and left a grey, nutrient-depleted, sandy subsoil behind. Slowly and patiently we have employed the organic techniques of tree planting, mulching, composting and introducing animals and their manure to restructure and replenish the soil. No chemical fertilisers or weedkillers have been employed in our food production areas in the entire twenty-five years that we have managed the property and we have been committed to weed management without the use of chemicals on the property in it’s entirety since 2012.

We are committed to producing natural, sustainable products, reducing waste and re-using and recycling whenever possible.
